After last year’s successful visit to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular we’ve been asked by several people to repeat this trip.
The Thursford Christmas Spectacular is the biggest Christmas show in Europe and is a fabulous show with acts from around the world. Despite many recommendations, we were still taken aback at just how good the show was!
We generally try to depart between 8am and 9am, and exact times will be confirmed in the final timings itinerary which arrives about a week before travel.
We send this close to travel so we can plan for any major traffic issues which sometimes arise due to road works etc.

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.
To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.
Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.
We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

Today we take a casual run to Cambridge for a long lunchbreak and look around the city. As we don’t fill our coaches, you can enjoy spare space, and, as it’s not a long trip, there should be room for all your Christmas shopping!
In the afternoon, we venture onwards to Norwich to stay in the 4* Maids Head hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. Probably the best hotel in Norwich and one of our favourites.
In our efforts to avoid a fixed dining time and static 3-course menu, here you can book your own dining time and choose what you like from the menu and eat with whoever you like, or you might want to venture into the city as the hotel is near the centre.
Of the many times we’ve been to Norwich over the years we’ve never actually looked at the city itself, which has some of the best shopping you can enjoy. The centre is compact and filled with independent retailers, artisans and award-winning lanes (according to Visit Norwich) and the day is yours to enjoy.
In the evening, we head to Thursford for the big show with elevated seats set back from the stage so you can take it all in. (The stage is huge and people at the front suffer from neck ache.)
Finishing at about 10pm, we should be back to the hotel around 11pm
After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll depart and head to Colchester for a long lunch stop and another shopping opportunity.
Colchester has a Fenwicks department store and many other independent stores as well as a castle (the museum) and the well-preserved remains of the Roman Wall, giving us much to look at, whatever your interests.
Please note, all venues will require walking, possibly with steps and steep slopes, which may be slippery and uneven. You should be prepared to dress appropriately for the weather.
