What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary for The Newt and other joys of Somerset

Day 1Go West!

We head west to Somerset and the star attraction – The Newt in Somerset. This garden has been making quite a name for itself in recent years and today we will see why.
After spending a few hours here, we continue to Bath to our base for the week, the Hampton by Hilton, a lovely 4-star hotel. We’re booked here on a bed and breakfast basis as it’s a city centre hotel so you’re free to go out to explore or eat in the hotel restaurant as you please.

Day 2Secret Gardens and the beauty of Wells

Striking out from our hotel, we wind our way towards Shepton Mallet where we visit the hidden gem of Kilver Court Gardens before continuing on to the city of Wells and a visit to The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, which come highly recommended to us.
After spending however long you want here, you’re free to explore the city itself. Though not huge, it is beautiful and worth spending a few hours here.

Day 3Forde Abbey and East Lambrook

Today we discover two jewels in one unforgettable day. Explore the majestic grounds of Forde Abbey, rich with history and stunning water features, then wander the intimate, English cottage-style gardens of East Lambrook Manor. A perfect blend of grandeur and charm awaits.

Day 4Yes, even further West!

Two treats lie in store for us today as we explore the stunning landscapes of Hestercombe House and Gardens – where Georgian elegance meets Edwardian charm via Victorian ingenuity. Enjoy sweeping views, vibrant borders and tranquil walks. A perfect escape for garden lovers and history enthusiasts.
In the afternoon we enjoy Watcombe Gardens at Winscombe which offer a delightful blend of colour, charm and tranquillity. This hidden gem showcases cottage-style planting, winding paths and peaceful corners – perfect for garden lovers seeking inspiration and serenity.

Day 5Bradford-on-Avon and home

We spend the morning in Bradford-on-Avon, a picturesque market town nestled just across the border in Wiltshire, rich in history and charm. Its medieval bridge, Saxon church and Georgian architecture offer a timeless backdrop. You’ll be able to browse independent shops or enjoy riverside cafés. With its blend of heritage and beauty, it’s a perfect destination for a relaxing and culturally rich day out.
Then, we wind our way home to arrive in the early afternoon.

Please note that all destinations will require walking, with steps and slopes, which may be slippery, with the need to step between quayside and boat deck. Sensible shoes are a requirement and you should dress for the weather. You must be able to walk comfortably for at least a mile to get the most from this holiday.
