Departure Locations & Times

We aim to cross by Eurotunnel as it’s faster than the ferry, but we still need time to check in, and we also lose an hour on the crossing. To this end, we have to leave early so we may depart Kent between 7am and 9:30am to ensure there is no rush to reach our hotel on the other side.

The final timings itinerary, which arrives about a week before travel, will confirm exact times.

Departure Date

What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary

Day 1Travel to The Netherlands

With no pressure to visit any venues this day we’ll likely depart the Kent area between 8:00am and 9:00am (depending on what crossing times we can secure) and take a leisurely drive to the Eurotunnel for the quickest of crossings and, with regular stops, arrive in the beautiful city of Delft in the late afternoon.
Our base for the next few days will be the beautiful Best Western Museum Hotel in the centre of town, where we’ll enjoy a first night dinner. For those wishing to upgrade to dinner each night, this will be served at a lovely restaurant around 400 yards away and is a generous package, including four drinks and choices for starters and mains, but not dessert.

Day 2Delft and Amsterdam (as you like it)

We have an easy day with a late departure and short trip to visit the Royal Delft pottery to enjoy the small museum, see some of the factory’s production, and maybe pick up a lovely souvenir in their incredible shop.
For the rest of the day, you can either remain in Delft and acquaint yourself with the lovely town, enjoy the pavement cafés or visit the museums and churches in the centre; or we’ll take you to Amsterdam, perhaps to visit the Rijksmuseum or take a trip on the canals.

Day 3A Castle and a Palace

A reasonably busy day today visiting the largest castle in the Netherlands: Kasteel de Haar, near Utrecht, which also has lovely gardens and is almost Disney-like in appearance!
From here we progress to the Palace of Het Loo. When William of Orange became King of England during the Glorious Revolution this was a modest hunting lodge but, seeing as he was now the King of England, he thought he probably ought to build himself a palace and this lovely site is the result! It’s also newly reopened after a 17 million Euro restoration – just for us, I’m sure!

Day 4The main highlight! - Keukenhof day!

In the morning, there is an optional early start to see the dealing rooms at Royal FloraHolland. This site is reputed to be the largest building on earth, where billions of pounds of plants are processed and traded through an operation which will leave you in total awe.
Following this we go to Keukenhof for the day. Amazingly, most coach companies only come here for three hours, but we can’t even get halfway around in three hours, so we give you the day to see all 79 acres and the millions of bulbs in flower. You did read that right – millions of bulbs, in a parkland of lakes and trees and pavilions.

Day 5Trompenberg Arboretum and home

Departing at a reasonable hour, we will head south to Trompenberg Arboretum that’s actually within the city of Rotterdam and will be showing some lovely spring colour.
Afterwards we’ll make our way to Eurotunnel via PJ Chocolates on the Belgian/French border for a comfort break and the opportunity to buy top quality chocolates at factory prices – and they are very lovely!
After crossing via Eurotunnel, we should return to Kent in the early evening.

Note: It is a condition of the trip that you have travel insurance to cover any medical needs, including repatriation costs.

Please note that all destinations will require walking, possibly with steps and slopes, which may be slippery. Sensible shoes are a requirement, and you should dress for the weather.
