Tour Details for Royal Scotland

Scotland has long been associated with the Royal Family and we will visit a number of high-profile castles, palaces and gardens culminating in an exclusive private visit and dinner on The Royal Yacht Britannia.

As part of our visit, you will have unparalleled access to places normally roped off, and our private dinner will be something special that would please Her Majesty herself.

Having eaten at many fine establishments over the years, we are confident this will be either the best – or one of the best – meals you will ever eat. On the last occasion we visited, the food was so good, hardly anyone spoke!

We will make travelling to and from Scotland a relaxing pleasure by stopping at venues on the way, including overnight stops at Harrogate, a lovely spa town.

This will truly be the trip of a lifetime!

What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary for Royal Scotland

Day 1Travel to Harrogate via Burghley House

We will travel to Harrogate via Burghley House. Burghley was conceived by William Cecil, the Lord High Treasurer to Elizabeth I, and remains one of the country’s finest 16th century houses, reflecting the confidence felt in the country as her reign took hold.
In the 1750s, the 9th Earl employed Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown to improve the parkland estate lying beyond the formal gardens.
After a few hours looking at this wonderful treasure we will progress onwards to Harrogate and the lovely Cedar Court Hotel, which is situated close to the centre if you would like to walk in. Here we will enjoy dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation.

Day 2Make our way into Scotland

This will be the longest day of our tour as we make our way into Scotland. To break our journey, we will visit Cragside.
Originally owned by the remarkable Lord Armstrong, and now one of National Trust’s most interesting properties, we can explore the grounds and garden of the first house lit by hydroelectricity; it is still full of Armstrong’s invented gadgets. The gardens are described as ‘incredible’ with one of the largest rock gardens in Europe, leading to a lovely formal garden.
Moving on, we head to our overnight stop, the highly commended Apex City Hotel and Spa. This 4-star hotel is set on the Quayside at Dundee and offers wonderful spa facilities and a lovely pool, which we may swim in free of charge whilst staying. We will base ourselves here for 2 nights on a Dinner Bed and Breakfast basis

Days 3Balmoral and Glamis Castles

This morning, we head to Her Majesty The Queen’s summer home, Balmoral, to gain an insight into the environment she enjoys so much on her time off from state functions.
In the afternoon, we travel on to Glamis Castle, home of the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Here, we can enjoy the lovely gardens as well as the castle itself. We can imagine the presence of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and George VI throughout the site.
In the evening, we return to Apex city Hotel and Spa for dinner bed and Scottish breakfast (never make the mistake of asking for a ‘full English’ in Scotland!)

Day 4Scone Palace and dinner aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia

Today, we check out of our hotel and venture out to visit Scone Palace.
Scone is the ancestral home of the Scottish Kings and you may be aware of the ‘Stone of Scone’, which was seized from Scotland in 1296 by Edward 1 as a spoil of war and sat under King Edward’s Chair in Westminster Abbey as the throne used by all monarchs during coronations.
In 1996 it was agreed it should be kept in Scotland, except for coronations, and is now retained in the Crown Room at Edinburgh Castle, alongside the Scottish Crown Jewels.
In the afternoon we head on to Edinburgh and visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse (Holyrood Palace), the official residence of The Queen in Scotland.
In the late afternoon, we will check in to our next hotel, The Edinburgh Marriot Hotel, just outside Edinburgh, to give us time to prepare for the highlight of the tour, a private group dinner on Britannia.
On arrival at the quayside, we will be piped aboard by a piper in full regalia for welcome drinks, a private tour of the vessel and a formal dinner at the same tables the queen used to dine on.
We cannot stress that this event will be of a standard that Her Majesty would recognise and expect. It is not to be missed.
You will experience food and service above and beyond anything you would normally receive and, to mark it as a truly special occasion, we will be insisting gentlemen wear jacket and tie and ladies dress to an equivalent standard.

Day 5The Alnwick Castle and Garden, then back to Harrogate

We strike southwards to England and visit The Alnwick Castle and Garden, home to the Percy family for 700 years. As Barons and later Dukes of Northumberland, they were once one of the most powerful families in England. At one point, they were linked to the Gunpowder Plot through one of the original conspirators, Thomas Percy, who died in the final shootout at Holbeche House. With Percy dead, there was nobody to implicate or clear the actual Earl, and Percy’s brother, Henry, then spent some time in the Tower of London, albeit in some comfort, with 20 servants!
In recent years, Alnwick, has gained fame through the work of Jane Percy, Duchess of Northumberland, who has designed a rather remarkable garden, regarded as the most ambitious in the UK since the Second World War, and well worth a visit of a few hours.
From Alnwick, we return to the Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate on a dinner bed and breakfast basis.

Day 6Home via Belton House

On our last day, we travel towards home with a stop at Belton House. Owned by the Brownlow family up to 1984, and now owned by the National Trust, Belton is often cited as being the perfect example of an English country house estate. The house sits elegantly within tidy formal gardens enjoying wider views of the surrounding deer park.
Though visited by Queen Adelaide (widow of William IV) in 1841, Belton’s recent royal connection lies in the romantic entanglement of Edward and Mrs Simpson. Edward was Godfather to Lord Brownlow’s heir and the house was offered as a bolthole for Mrs Simpson during the ‘hostile’ period after the death of George V, when there was speculation that someone might even shoot her.
Unfortunately, Wallis Simpson loved socialising and shopping so much she was eventually escorted by Lord Brownlow to France. She never lived in England again and Brownlow was threatened that if he attended Edward’s wedding, his role as Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk would become uncomfortable. Brownlow declined the wedding and retired to Belton.
Prince Charles also often stayed whilst training at RAF Cranwell.
Finally, we press on to our final destination where we must part company and reflect on our great adventure together.

Please note that all destinations will require walking, with steps and slopes, which may be slippery, and the need to step between the quayside and boat deck. Sensible shoes are a requirement, and you should dress for the weather.
