North Yorkshire combines magnificent historic houses, colourful gardens, a vibrant city and a spectacular coast. This six-day tour brings together some of the county’s greatest treats.

We stay for five nights at the highly regarded 4-star Middleton Hotel in York on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. Highlights include Belvoir Castle, Castle Howard, Breezy Knees Gardens, York, Newby Hall and Gardens, Whitby and Easton Walled Gardens.

We generally try to depart between 8am and 9am, and exact times will be confirmed in the final timings itinerary which arrives about a week before travel. 

We send this close to travel so we can plan for any major traffic issues which sometimes arise due to road works etc.

What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

Itinerary for North Yorkshire’s Greatest Treats - 2027

Day 1Run to the North

Heading north, we stop at Belvoir Castle, pronounced ‘Beaver Castle’, one of England’s finest stately homes. Set on a hill overlooking the Vale of Belvoir, this dramatic Gothic Revival castle is the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Rutland and is surrounded by extensive parkland and restored formal gardens.

With regular comfort stops, we continue to York and our base for the week, the highly regarded 4-star Middleton Hotel, where we stay on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2Something well known, something not so

We begin at Castle Howard, a magnificent 18th-century English Baroque stately home designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. Home to the Howard family for more than three centuries, it stands within expansive parkland and is renowned for its striking central dome and art collections.

We then visit Breezy Knees Gardens near York. Covering more than 20 acres, it showcases over 10,000 varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees across colourful garden areas, herbaceous borders, rose gardens, fountains and meadows.

Day 3Freedom in York

Today is free for you to enjoy York at your own pace. You might visit York Minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum or The Shambles, walk the city walls or simply relax.

All venues today are at your own expense.

Day 4Newby Hall and Gardens

Today we enjoy a short but full day at Newby Hall and Gardens near Ripon. Set beside the River Ure, it combines 40 acres of award-winning gardens with an elegant Georgian mansion renowned for interiors by Robert Adam and furniture by Thomas Chippendale.

Highlights include spectacular herbaceous borders, rose gardens and woodland walks. In the late afternoon we return to York for more free time.

Day 5Whitby, Dracula, jet, fish and chips

We spend the day in Whitby, the historic seaside town where the River Esk meets the North Sea. Famous for its harbour, beaches and abbey ruins, Whitby has strong links with Captain James Cook, whaling and Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

You can browse the jet shops, climb the 199 steps to St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey, see Cook’s monument, explore the shops and arcades, and sample the town’s famous fish and chips.

All venues today are at your own expense.

Day 6Home, with a lovely garden, shop and café along the way

After checking out, we travel south and stop at Easton Walled Gardens near Grantham. These beautifully restored 12-acre gardens feature sweet peas, roses, meadows and cut-flower gardens in a peaceful landscape through which the River Witham flows.

After our visit, we continue our journey home.

Please note that all venues require walking, which may include steps, steep slopes and uneven or slippery paths. Sensible shoes are essential, and you should dress appropriately for the weather.
