What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary for Great Gardens of the North Cotswolds - 2027

Day 1To the Cotswolds!

We journey north-west and make our first stop at Miserden. The garden dates from the 1620s and was later reshaped by Edwin Lutyens, who added its five-bay Tuscan loggia. Long borders and topiaried hedges provide beautiful structure, while the former glasshouses now support a plant nursery and café.

In the evening we continue to Hotel du Vin in the spa town of Cheltenham, our base for three nights.

Day 2A touch of India and something more modest

We begin at Sezincote, often described as ‘India in the Cotswolds’. Its remarkable Mogul-style house, minarets, pavilions, water garden and rare planting create one of the area’s most unusual estates.

We then visit Batsford Arboretum, beautifully set on a hillside with trees and large plants from around the world, plus a garden centre and restaurant.

Our final visit is Bourton House Garden, featured on Gardeners’ World and known for luxuriant terraces, wide herbaceous borders, imaginative topiary, spring-fed water features, a Shade House and White Garden.

Day 3A loved garden and a managed garden

We start at Kiftsgate Court Garden, home of the famous Kiftsgate Rose. Created by three generations of women gardeners, its borders, terraces and dramatic hillside setting have developed organically since the 1920s.

In the afternoon we move next door to Hidcote, famed for its outdoor garden rooms. Box, hornbeam, yew and stone walls create distinctive spaces linked by vistas, topiary, ponds, fountains and carefully selected planting.

Day 4A collector’s hideaway

On our final day we visit Snowshill Manor, the unconventional home of the eccentric collector Charles Wade. The garden offers hidden vistas and unexpected delights, including Wolf’s Cove model village and the Priest’s House.

Inside the manor, thousands of objects range from tiny toys and musical instruments to bicycles and Samurai armour, displayed as Wade intended.

We then wind our way home, hopefully armed with fresh ideas for our own gardens.

Please note that all venues require walking, which may include steps, steep slopes and uneven or slippery paths. Sensible shoes are essential, and you should dress appropriately for the weather.
