The Great Gardens of Cornwall – 2027

Tucked away in the Somerset countryside, East Lambrook Manor Gardens is a horticultural treasure renowned for its romantic cottage planting and rich collection of rare plants. Meandering pathways lead visitors through colourful borders, tranquil courtyards and beautifully designed garden rooms, each offering a different seasonal display. Created by celebrated gardening writer Margery Fish, the gardens retain their intimate charm and provide a delightful escape for plant enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

After finishing our visit to this horticultural gem, we make our way to our lodgings for the tour, the truly splendid Carlyon Bay Hotel. Having based ourselves here on several occasions, it has always proved to be one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in and we can recommend the tour just for the hotel itself!

Today we start with Trebah! Nestled in a steeply sheltered Cornish valley, Trebah Garden is a spectacular subtropical paradise leading down to a private beach on the Helford River. Towering exotic plants, giant gunnera and vibrant seasonal flowers create a lush, jungle-like atmosphere. Winding paths reveal breathtaking viewpoints and peaceful corners, making every visit an adventure. In the afternoon we visit Bonython which combines formal design with natural beauty in a stunning Cornish setting. Visitors can explore colourful herbaceous borders, tranquil lakes, woodland walks and innovative planting schemes that showcase both traditional and contemporary gardening styles. Throughout the seasons, the gardens offer an ever-changing display of colour and texture. With its peaceful atmosphere and beautifully maintained landscapes, Bonython is a rewarding destination for gardeners and nature lovers seeking inspiration.

We start today with the surprising garden at Lamorran. Overlooking the sparkling waters of St Mawes, Lamorran House Gardens is often described as a subtropical paradise. Sheltered by Cornwall’s mild climate, the gardens feature palms, tree ferns, exotic flowering plants and lush foliage from around the world. Pathways wind between ponds, sculptures and secluded terraces, creating a magical sense of discovery. The garden’s tranquil atmosphere and spectacular coastal views make it one of Cornwall’s hidden gems.

Moving on from Lamorran, we head to the world famous Eden Project. The Eden Project is one of the UK’s most iconic visitor attractions, combining stunning architecture with fascinating environmental education. Its enormous biomes recreate rainforest and Mediterranean climates, housing thousands of plant species from across the globe. Visitors can journey through diverse ecosystems, discover inspiring sustainability projects and enjoy a range of exhibitions and events. Set within a dramatic former clay quarry, the Eden Project offers a unique blend of science, nature and adventure.

Today begins with Trewithen garden, a magnificent historic estate celebrated for its impressive collection of camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons. Set within beautiful parkland, the gardens feature sweeping lawns, ancient woodland and elegant pathways that invite leisurely exploration. Seasonal highlights provide dazzling displays of colour, while rare and mature specimens add botanical interest throughout the year. Combining grandeur with tranquillity, Trewithen offers visitors a classic Cornish garden experience in a truly remarkable setting.

The afternoon follows on with Heligan. The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a captivating restoration story and one of Cornwall’s most enchanting attractions. Once abandoned and hidden beneath decades of growth, the gardens have been lovingly revived to reveal productive Victorian walled gardens, exotic plantings and mysterious woodland walks. Visitors can explore hidden pathways, encounter the famous living sculptures and discover a landscape rich in history and wildlife. Heligan blends intrigue, beauty and heritage in equal measure.

Today, we add a new venue to us, Lanhydrock, which is a magnificent National Trust estate featuring impressive formal gardens, extensive woodland and a grand Victorian country house. Colourful borders, elegant terraces and peaceful riverside walks provide endless opportunities to explore. Ancient trees and scenic parkland create a rich habitat for wildlife, while the house offers a fascinating glimpse into life in a wealthy Victorian household. Together, the gardens and estate make Lanhydrock one of Cornwall’s most rewarding destinations.

We follow on with an afternoon visit to Tregrehan, a remarkable privately owned garden known for its exceptional collection of rare and exotic plants. Benefiting from Cornwall’s mild climate, it supports species from around the world, creating a lush and distinctive landscape. Visitors can wander through woodland gardens, admire unusual trees and discover vibrant planting combinations throughout the seasons. The garden’s relaxed atmosphere and botanical significance make it a favourite among plant enthusiasts and keen gardeners.

After checking out of our hotel, we wind our way home with lots of stops and will have a longer stop and lunch at Stourhead.

Widely regarded as one of the finest landscape gardens in England, Stourhead is a masterpiece of 18th-century design. A beautiful lake forms the centrepiece, surrounded by classical temples, elegant bridges and carefully framed views. Every turn reveals a picture-perfect scene inspired by art and mythology. Seasonal displays of spring blossoms, summer greenery and autumn colour ensure year-round appeal. Combining natural beauty with architectural splendour, Stourhead offers an unforgettable day out.
