The Netherlands is a stunningly beautiful country of big lazy rivers and clean, beautiful, old towns with numerous bicycles and friendly people who all speak English.

Looking at all this today, it’s hard to believe that 80 years ago this area was the scene of a huge Anglo-American operation to liberate the Netherlands quickly and end the War by Christmas 1944.

Today, we can enjoy the stunning beauty of these places, hear the story of our men in an uplifting way, and celebrate the freedom they helped give us.

We are joined for this trip by guided experts with personal connections to history:

  • Colonel Piers Storie Pugh (Retired): A highly respected member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides, with badge number 12, and a close family connection to the Battle for Arnhem Bridge itself. His insights challenge the myths and bring new perspectives to this historic event.
  • Jeanne Melchers: A knowledgeable guide on Dutch life under occupation and the heroic Dutch Resistance. Her father was a decorated resistance leader, and Jeanne shares powerful stories about the Hunger Winter, the post-war legacy, and the enduring impact of these events.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary for Beyond the call of duty, Nijmegen and Arnhem

Day 1To The Netherlands

We take Eurotunnel and travel to Nijmegen to stay in the lovely 4* Mercure Nijmegen, ten minutes’ walk from the centre of the beautiful town of Nijmegen.
We’ll stop along the way at Grave Bridge, the objective of the 101st (US) Airborne Division, to see the first of the great rivers that carve through the Southern Netherlands.
Dinner is included on this night.

Day 2Nijmegen – the Americans arrive!

In the morning, we’ll walk through this stunning town and visit the Belvedere Observation Point, overlooking Waal Bridge and hear about the events at Nijmegen and the 82nd (US) Airborne Division’s heroic crossing of the Waal River in broad daylight using canvas boats with only hands and rifle butts as paddles.
We’ll even get to drive down one of the great levees that border this vast river.
After finding our own lunch in Nijmegen we’ll board the coach to visit Groesbeek Heights to visit the Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial and the National Liberation Museum.

Day 3The British and Arnhem – heroism unequalled

After breakfast, we take a leisurely drive north to visit the heathland of the Ginkelse Heide Landing Zones of the 1st British Airborne Division before they moved off into the direction of Arnhem. We’ll then head to the blocking line at Wolfheze where the advance to Arnhem was held up.
We then make a stop in the lovely village Oosterbeek where you can find lunch in one of several cafés. Afterwards, we’ll go on to visit the Hartenstein Museum, which was a beautiful hotel and the HQ of the British Airborne Division.
Returning to the Mercure Nijmege in Nijmegen for bed and breakfast you’ll once again be free to explore Nijmegen in the evening.

Day 4The Polish and withdrawal

Our last day and we will follow the route of the 2nd British Army to the village of Elst to see the ultimate limit of their advance, followed by Arnhem Bridge where the 2nd Parachute Battalion fought so hard.
This is followed by a tour of the beautiful area between Oosterbeek and the Rhine, including Lonsdale Church, through which the rest of 1st Airborne withdrew on their way to the river for evacuation. We’ll then cross the Neder Rhine by ferry at Westerbouwing Heights; and visit the Polish Memorial.
You will be free to find lunch in Oosterbeek village followed by a visit to the beautifully maintained Oosterbeek War Cemetery and the Glider Pilots Memorial.
We then return to the hotel for bed and breakfast accommodation.

Day 5Return Home

Today we return to the UK via Eurotunnel, but on the way, we very much hope to stop off at the grave of Dambuster hero Guy Gibson.

Please note, all venues will require walking, possibly with steps and steep slopes, which may be slippery and uneven. You should be prepared to dress appropriately for the weather.
