Remember Patrick McGoohan as a kidnapped secret service agent in the 1960’s television show? Filmed in Portmerion, parts of the village are now a hotel, and we can stay in many of the buildings!

The hotel today is in high demand, exclusive, and with excellent dining, which is included in the price. We’ve been very lucky to secure a group booking for these peak dates!

The village was created by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1976 to show how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. We will have ample opportunity to enjoy this quirky and much-loved tourist attraction.

Of course, while we’re in the area, we thought we’d visit a few of the iconic locations North Wales has to offer!

What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary for Be the Prisoner at Portmeirion

Day 1To the Mountains!

After a not too early start, we’ll wind our way with regular stops to the mountain passes of Snowdownia to reach Portmeirion on the coast, where we will stay on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis for the duration of the holiday.

Day 2Bodnant and Caernarfon Castle

Leaving the hotel just before 9:00am, we travel through the mountains to the amazing spring treat that is Bodnant. This is a world-famous garden home to National Collections and Champion Trees, which sits in the foothills of Eryri (Snowdonia). The garden we see today was laid out 150 years ago by industrialist Henry Davis Pochin and was developed further by his descendants.
There is a great deal to see in these glorious gardens including shrub-filled glades, dells and water gardens, Victorian gardens, Edwardian Italianate Terraces, the Georgian-era Old Park and a great deal of garden architecture including the Pin Mill and a Victorian mausoleum. We are visiting when the famous 55-metre-long Laburnum Arch should be in full flower.
On a previous visit, several clients revealed how they had visited previously in the summer but not appreciated how much more beautiful the garden was in the spring.
Moving on from Bodnant after lunch, we’ll run around the coast to Caernarfon Castle and town.
The imposing Caernarfon Castle sits in an incredibly strategic position overlooking the Menai Strait between northwest Wales and Anglesey. It is by far the largest of King Edward I’s stone castles, started in the late 13th century on the site of an earlier 11th century motte-and-bailey wooden structure. After falling into disrepair in Tudor times, the state eventually funded repairs in the 19th century and the site is now managed by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd’.

Day 3Steam in the Mountains and time at Portmeirion

Today we will enjoy an awe-inspiring train trip up Wales’ highest mountain, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), starting at the picturesque Llanberis Station and ending at the incredible off-grid visitor centre at the summit: Hafod Eryri. On the journey we will pass waterfalls and gorges, abandoned farms, chapels and medieval settlements. There will be time at the summit to enjoy the view and grab refreshments before the return train.

Day 4And home we go!

We depart after breakfast and wind our way back home with regular stops, so we have a comfortable journey, returning in the late afternoon.

Please note that all destinations will require walking, with steps and slopes, which may be slippery. Sensible shoes are a requirement and you should dress for the weather.
