Althorp is just too far for a day trip and so we’ve rolled it into a short holiday with some other fine visits that are not to be missed!

Across the industry, venues and coach operators have seen a sharp drop in day trip bookings due to the Cost-of-Living Crisis.

Cancellations and rollovers are never ideal, so to avoid disappointment we’re introducing waiting lists – just as we do successfully for Highgrove and Highclere.

From now on, we’ll ‘propose’ trips and invite you to join a waiting list. Once enough interest is registered, we’ll confirm the trip and if you’ve registered your interest, you’ll be given priority booking before a trip is widely advertised.

You can also suggest new ideas to us and we’ll see if there is enough interest to run it as a trip.

All proposed trips will appear on our website, where you can quickly register your interest. The sooner you do, the sooner we can plan.

We’ll email you occasionally with updates on trips nearing viable numbers and any new suggestions added to the list so it’s important we have your email address

What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary for Althorp, resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales, and other treasures of Northamptonshire - 2026

Day 1Ashridge House Gardens

Ashridge House is a stunning former royal residence set in 190 acres of landscaped gardens, offering sweeping lawns, vibrant borders and woodland walks. Plus, there’s a café for lunch!
After this lovely visit we move on to our lodgings for the holiday, the delightful Crowne Plaza Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Day 2One Hall, two lovely gardens

Today we explore Kelmarsh Hall’s graceful Georgian interiors and sweeping parkland, then wander through Coton Manor’s enchanting ten-acre garden, alive with vibrant borders. These two stunning destinations promise history, horticulture and heavenly views – perfect for garden lovers and seekers of beauty alike.

Day 3Althorp – Princess Diana’s home and resting place

Althorp offers timeless elegance and deep heritage. Explore the Spencer family estate, admire exquisite art and architecture, and reflect across the water from Princess Diana’s memorial. A serene, inspiring visit steeped in British history.
Then, in the afternoon, we return to Stratford-upon-Avon for free time in the town to visit anything which takes your fancy – apparently a well-known writer came from here!

Day 4A touch of Queen Anne on the way home

A hidden gem in Northamptonshire, Cottesbrooke offers a perfect blend of elegance and tranquillity. Explore the stunning Queen Anne house, then wander through beautifully landscaped gardens, including formal borders, wildflower meadows and a charming stream. With its rich history and horticultural excellence, Cottesbrooke promises a peaceful and inspiring last visit of this holiday before we venture on home.

Please note, all venues will require walking, possibly with steps and steep slopes, which may be slippery and uneven. You should be prepared to dress appropriately for the weather.
