What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary for RHS Malvern Spring Festival

Day 1Depart to Waterperry Gardens

We depart by 9.00am and travel to Waterperry Gardens. Made famous by Beatrix Havergal who established her school of Horticulture for Ladies here from 1932 to 1971, it’s now home to eight acres of beautifully landscaped ornamental gardens, plant centre, garden shop, gallery, gift shop, museum and tea shop.

After spending a few hours at Waterperry, we continue until we reach our hotel, the luxury 4-star Bank House Hotel and Spa at Bransford. We’ll have access to the spa (depending on availability) and the pool, so don’t forget to bring your swimming costume!

Day 2Depart to The Laskett Garden

After a leisurely breakfast, we leave the hotel and travel through the beautiful rolling hills of Herefordshire to The Laskett Garden. Until earlier on this century, it was one of England’s most hidden and private gardens. It still remains private, but now it is shared more widely than ever before with visitors coming from all over the world to see one of the most remarkable and inspirational gardens in England.

Set in the idyllic countryside of Herefordshire, on the Welsh borders, they are the creation of Sir Roy Strong CH and his late wife, Julia Trevelyan Oman CBE. The gardens – created from a bare field – were begun in 1974 and have continued to evolve ever since. They are the creative fruit of a happy marriage between two people who were at the centre of the arts for much of the latter half of the twentieth century. Their lives together are lovingly celebrated and remembered in this four-acre patch of Herefordshire soil.

After our visit, we move along to Hampton Court Castle and Gardens. Hampton Court Castle started its journey in the early 15th century. Set in the delightful Herefordshire countryside, surrounded by vast lawns, a stunning woodland backdrop, and magnificent award-winning gardens, the estate has an interesting and varied history.

The 12 acres of stunning gardens and parkland feature flower gardens, kitchen gardens (highly acclaimed), herbaceous borders, avenues, island pavilions, canals and a 150-year old wisteria tunnel leading to expanses of sweeping lawns. The 1,000-yew maze, with a gothic tower at its centre, offers panoramic views of the gardens, and a secret tunnel leads to a waterfall in the sunken garden.

Days 3Explore Morgan Cars and free time Worcester

We’ve all seen and heard of Morgan Cars, possibly even dreamed of owning one and sweeping down country lanes on a summer’s day! Well, Morgan, sensing an opportunity, have a factory tour where we can see the craftsmanship that goes into making this iconic car. We will also visit the Morgan shop, café and museum. Who knows, maybe you’ll be tempted to buy one?

In the afternoon, we’ve allowed free time in Worcester or back at the hotel. Worcester is a particularly beautiful city, with the River Severn flowing through it. Worcester Cathedral is a very worthwhile visit, with over 1,000 years of history, and is the resting place of some surprising historical figures such as the infamous King John of Magna Carta fame and brother of Richard the Lionheart, Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, and Henry VIII’s elder brother, Arthur.

Day 4RHS Spring Festival, Malvern

We spend a full day at the RHS Spring Festival, Malvern. Set in the shadow of the distinctive Malvern Hills, we can enjoy all the sights and gardens an RHS show has to offer, but without the crush of Chelsea or the prices of Hampton Court.

Day 5Travel back with stops

We take a leisurely run back home.

Note: Exact details are still to be confirmed, but we will also be visiting a major horticultural production nursery at some point during the trip and lifting the veil on a little-understood aspect of the plant production industry.

The holiday includes coach transport, hotel accommodation on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis, entry to all named venues, and services of a group leader.

Please note that all destinations will require walking, with steps and slopes, which may be slippery. Sensible shoes are a requirement, and you should dress for the weather.

We have taken both day and mini-break trips( with good 4 star accommodation) with Pennywood. The trips are well-organised with a detailed itinerary allowing plenty of time to enjoy each house or garden, some of which are less well-known attractions.

We have enjoyed a number of trips with Pennywood Tours, which save us driving long distances - and the coaches are very comfortable. What we particularly like, apart from the gardens we visit, are the hotels we stay in, which have always been excellent.
