Tour Details

For anyone in the know, Keukenhof is one of the places in the world that must be visited at least once, though if you have already been, you’ll want to go again!

Imagine millions of tulip bulbs (yes, MILLIONS) mixed with other flowers such as daffodils and muscari, to create a sea of floral delight.

We mix this heaven with a visit to other attractions, which will surprise and even overawe you: Aalsmeer Flower Market, the World Heritage site at Schokland, the ‘Venice of the North’ that is Giethoorn, and a free day in Amsterdam to wander around the beautiful old centre.

Helpfully, almost all Dutch (92%) speak English, so you can be sure of an easy time when you need to speak to the locals.

What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.

Itinerary

Day 1Travel to The Netherlands

We will take the Eurotunnel between Folkestone and Calais and then travel northwards. Stopping at least twice, one of these stops will be at the Delta Works Museum.

You may have heard of the devastating 1953 flood which killed 1,836 people in the Netherlands, so you’ll understand that water and its management is critical to the Dutch, especially as 20% of the country is below sea level!

The museum chronicles the development of the world’s largest flood defence system, (described as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers), and they have a café and toilets!

Finally, we will arrive at the Mövenpick Hotel for our four-night stay. The hotel is one of the tallest in Amsterdam and provides stunning views across the city.

Day 2Keukenhof day!

We have a later start so you can recover from the travelling, get properly unpacked, and enjoy a lazy breakfast.

Keukenhof is very busy between 11am and 4pm, so we will arrive in the middle of the day, but stay until it closes at 7pm. This will give you lots of time to see the park when it is quiet and the light is much better for photography.

The restaurants and cafés will be open until the park closes.

Day 3Out-and-about in Holland

This will be a long day packed with wonder and awe!

We start by leaving the hotel at 7.30am (you can order a take-out breakfast from the hotel) and then we travel to the Alsmeer Flower Market.

This will be an eye-opener! The Dutch control around 90% of the world’s cut flower market and Aalsmeer trades billions of euros of stock using systems which are quite remarkable. You’ll even get to see the ‘Dutch Auction’, as traders try to hold their nerve and buy at the lowest price as the price falls and falls before competitors buy first.
We will then travel north into the ‘polder’ which is land reclaimed from the sea. Our next stop will be at the World Heritage Site of Schokland.

It’s tempting to think that nobody was much affected by this land reclamation, but the reality is that the sea was shallow, with islands of small communities, who suddenly found their lives dramatically changed. The site also has a café!
Moving on from Schokland, we travel a short distance to visit Blokzijl, which was formerly a fishing village but, cut off from saltwater, now serves as a leisure harbour and is very scenic – and there are lots of cafés!

Moving along from Blokzijl, we finally reach Giethoorn, known as the ‘Venice of the North’. Giethoorn is a traditional Dutch village, but instead of a traditional high street and other roads, it’s served by canals.

Within the town, there is a small village history museum and a rock shop with a stone and mineral museum attached. We haven’t included a visit to these, but I can recommend the rock shop as worth a visit. There are also a number of cafés in the settlement.
We aim to return to the hotel by 6.30pm.

Day 4A free day in Amsterdam

A free day for you to choose how you would like to see Amsterdam.

The old part of the city that interests most people is the product of the 17th century Golden Age, with its canals and narrow houses, and contains numerous attractions: the Rijksmuseum, canal trips, the Anne Frank House, (it’s best to buy a timed ticket in advance) and the Oude Kerk (Old Church).

It is a very beautiful and romantic city and worth a day’s leisurely stroll.

Day 5We make our way home

Today we bid farewell to our hotel, at around 9am, so there will be an opportunity to look at the view one more time!

We will then make our way home, stopping regularly for breaks, before returning to Coolings, with a target return time of 6pm.

Please note that all destinations will require walking, possibly with steps and slopes, which may be slippery. Sensible shoes are a requirement and you should dress for the weather.

We have taken both day and mini-break trips( with good 4 star accommodation) with Pennywood. The trips are well-organised with a detailed itinerary allowing plenty of time to enjoy each house or garden, some of which are less well-known attractions.

We have enjoyed a number of trips with Pennywood Tours, which save us driving long distances - and the coaches are very comfortable. What we particularly like, apart from the gardens we visit, are the hotels we stay in, which have always been excellent.
