Itinerary for Corso, Zundert

Day 1Travel to the Netherlands

We take the Ferry between Dover and Calais and then travel northwards with stops along the way for refreshments and comfort.

It is our aim to arrive at the Fletcher Hotel, Middelburg, in the early afternoon to allow you to settle in and enjoy the town.

Imagine: a beautiful, old Dutch town like Amsterdam, but with fewer canals and tourists, and you have Middelburg. The capital of Zeeland in the west of the Netherlands, the town boasts a rich history dating back to the 8th or 9th century and was central to trade between the UK and Flanders as well as the Dutch East India Company, the first ever company owned by shareholders.

Despite damage during WWII (nobody is sure if it was caused by French Artillery or German bombers!) the centre has been restored and lavish 17th and 18th century merchant houses and storehouses remain standing along canals. The old city moats remain, as do two of the city gates. The medieval abbey is still in use today as a museum and as the seat of the provincial government.

Interestingly, Middelburg was at the centre of the development of ‘lens’ technology with Middelburg spectacle-makers being credited for the invention of the modern telescope and microscope.

Day 2Corso day!

After a leisurely breakfast, we leave the hotel for a drive into the interior of the Netherlands to the town of Zundert, where we arrive in good time to find something to eat and find our seats before the parade begins.

Established in 1936, the event itself comprises a competition between 20 local villages who build and parade huge floats. Each is built by hundreds of volunteers within the villages, costing them up to 20,000 euros per float! Combined with the many social events linked to the building of the floats, a kind of ‘Corso Fever’ sweeps the area in the weeks leading up to the parade, generating immense social cohesion amongst the competing settlements. It really is a serious business!

The floats themselves are up to three storeys high, made of steel wire, cardboard and papier mâché, covered in vast numbers of dahlia flowers. It’s estimated some eight million dahlias are needed for the event, six million of which are grown locally by volunteers. The floats follow various themes, with moving parts and sound, and humans are even woven into the designs!

Between the floats, we’ll see numerous marching bands (some even on bikes), in many colourful uniforms, playing all sorts of music and sometimes accompanied by dancers.

Attended by tens of thousands, people crowd the streets, balconies, rooftops – anywhere to get a view. Last year there were aircraft flying over the event trailing advertising banners! The whole event is even covered by a Dutch TV station.

In the evening, after the parade, we can go to the field where the floats are parked and get close up to see the scale and construction of them.

Days 3Zeeland

We will return to the UK but, depending on the time of our boat, we may enjoy a short tour around parts of Zeeland to give you a feel for the area.

Please note that all destinations will require walking, with steps and slopes, which may be slippery. Sensible shoes are a requirement, and you should dress for the weather.

What to Expect

Our aim at Pennywood Tours is to give you a relaxing and carefree time where we do all the work so you can sit back and enjoy the trip.

To this end, all tours are escorted by a group leader who will check you on board and make sure you can find your allocated seat. We’ll seat you with the person/people you are booked with but if you know of anyone else on the trip who has booked separately please let us know in advance and we’ll try to seat you all together. The coach will be a super deluxe vehicle with a toilet and is incredibly comfortable.

Our Group Leader will advise you of all the details of travel times, stops, when to return to the coach etc. so you will be in no doubt about what and when. He or she will be available for any additional questions you may have.

We will do our best to stick to our itinerary but you will understand that when there are traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, we may struggle to do everything as planned but we will let you know what information we have in these situations when we have it.

We look forward to seeing you and welcome any questions you may have by contacting us at info@pennywoodtours.com or on 01622 434 981.
